Travel Specials, Trip Reports & Updates From the World of Backcountry Travel

This Week in Photos

We’re slowly moving into Spring in Haines, Alaska.  Cold temperatures are prevailing in spite of rapidly increasing daylight. Salmon fry are beginning to emerge in the local rivers, supplying bounty for winter-starved, ravenous Cutthroat & Dolly Varden. Love this walk.  Filled with anticipation. Each week in Alaska holds something special on the rivers.

Spring Steelhead in Alaska

Prime Steelhead fly fishing is only a month away in Southeast Alaska. 6 spots remain for what I consider the ultimate opportunity to fish pristine rivers far removed from other fishermen or fishing pressure. Captain Larry of MV Perseverance takes pride in taking folks to locations only his unique operation can access. Fish remote rivers [...]

Spring Stoke

We’re a few weeks away from peak Steelhead fishing in Southeast Alaska. But I’ve been logging serious hours on the river this winter hoping to feel the weight of a chromer.  The hope continues… Drake is busy shuttling skiers, snowboarders & gear around the mountains surrounding Haines, and I’m heading into the backcountry later this [...]

TR: Haines Heliskiing

We’re 5 days into Aaron Moscowicz & Jesse Monsour’s heli trip to Haines, Alaska.  Four out of five days have been bluebird and they’ve been able to take full advantage of our record snowpack. A few highlights of their trip so far include getting a taste of the endless terrain surrounding Haines and fly fishing [...]

Alaska Fly Fishing Goods

Have a trip planned to the Kobuk to chase Sheefish and don’t know what rod or reel to bring?  Need a custom order of flies for the trip?  No problem, Alaska Fly Fishing Goods is here to help. Their site is a great resource for everything from learning about the life cycle of Dolly Varden [...]

Alaska Steelhead Fishing

We’re fortunate to offer an incredible opportunity aboard M/V Perseverance this Spring for mothership-style Alaska Steelhead fly fishing.  It doesn’t get much better than having your own floating lodge during Steelhead season in Southeast Alaska. The captain and crew of M/V Perseverance have teamed up with local guides in the Wrangell area to fish remote [...]

Fly Fishing With The Fonz

I idolized Henry Winkler as the Fonz.  I quoted him continuously in his role as Barry Zuckerkorn, legal counsel to the Bluth Family in my favorite television show of all time, Arrested Development. His new book I’ve Never Met an Idiot on the River, continues his legacy of making me smile.  Written in a casual [...]

Clouser Lust

How can one fly pattern be so versatile in catching fish?  I was given my first Chartreuse Clouser Minnow by a local Cape Cod fisherman on the Monomoy Islands at the age of 14.  We were fishing for Bluefish and Stripers in the river-like, heavy current, tidal flats surrounding the islands and this was the [...]

December Silver Salmon

Five of us skied into Chilkoot River on Sunday, hoping there might be a few Coho still milling about.  After 130 inches of snow in the month of November in Haines, a warm weekend with temperatures in the 40s and a little fly fishing was a much needed break from relentless shoveling. I don’t think [...]

Wild & Scenic Film Festival

I just returned from the Wild and Scenic Film Festival sponsored by our local Watershed Council in Haines.  An incredible evening of film, food and Haines Brewing Company beer.  Highlights included “Eastern Rises” with monster Kamchatka Peninsula Rainbows gobbling deer-hair mice. Another highlight was 6 year old Griffin Culbeck’s comment during “Scattered Flurries”, a short [...]
